I use various artistic open flame techniques to heat treat the convex surfaces, which drives out the moisture and starches and pulls a layer of protective oil to the surface, which after hand burnishing with food grade butcher block conditioner, leaves a protective finish on the outside and adds to the visual richness and texture. Careful hand sanding after smoothing the final shape insures a good handling tool. Bamboo crafting is not a perfect art, no two are the same, and just like people most with some bumps and bruises they've gathered along the way to add character! CARE AND FEEDING
The best maintenance is regular use. After use, I scrub mine off if needed, tossing them in the top rack of the dishwasher as I would any other kitchen tool. Though unlike the metal or plastic big store kitchen tools which can be immediately hung up or put in a drawer after every use, I regularly rub in / wipe off a drop or two of cooking oil, whatever kind is at hand. With a bit of care these will be loyal and useful kitchen companions.
