This is a traditional Portable Altar and Ghau Box, so the center of spirituality was always with the people of Tibet, even when refugees from their native home. Tibet is one of the most beautiful, high altitude country, with occasional rose gardens at 11,000 feet. When forced out of Tibet by the Chinese government, Nepal became a new home to many shops refugees. This is where the altars are currently created. They are a prayerful people, and each family created their own beautiful and portable altars, with different aspects of Buddha, of Tara, and of other sacred images, so they could carry their altar with them.

There is also the amazing LARGE ALTAR that is 7x5INCH plus the long silk strap. Highly recommend.

The MEDIUM Altar measures 5x4 INCHES plus a long silk strap and silk case that you are able to close with brass lotus buttons, that makes it portable, or wall art.
This altar is larger than my palm, and beautifully adorned with silver images, and other symbols.
I would call this silver working technique Repousse, or silver relief work.

I loved the stories of the man and his mother who sold these altars. He traveled around the world to visit the US, and his elderly mother traveled with him. He told me parts of this prayer box are about 400 years old. The fabric is old silk, I don't know how old. The sewing is newer, and the silk is backed with brown cotton..

The image of the god/goddess are old. It is beautiful and functional, as you can see in the photo, where the flap comes down, and can be secured when lifted to protect the altar, and is held in place by small round brass ball-shape button, that have lotuses on them. Clever, and inspiring. The symbolism is incredible. The entire inner case is metal. I hope you enjoy this eclectic spiritual art piece.
