Tapio Wirkkala Century Platinum Band / White Gold Large Platter - Rosenthal, shops Germany 1979 HTF

Designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1979 for Rosenthal, Germany, this is a hard-to-find large coupe-shaped elliptical platter from his award-winning Century dinnerware range. Century was available in solid white along with a number of very cool patterns that were designed by Wirkkala as well as others. Noted here is Wirkkala's seldom-seen White Gold - its name refers to the beautiful border which, like white gold, is actually a sophisticated semi-matte silver/platinum color. Wirkkala was commissioned by Rosenthal shops to design this new Century range of tabletop in honor of the manufacturer's 100th anniversary in 1979. The semi-matte platinum border is slightly different depending upon the particular piece on which it is used - here it functions as an inner perimeter. The Century White Gold platter noted here is in excellent condition with no discernible use or wear. Measures 15 1/8" x 11" (widest points of elliptical form) x 1 3/8" height; marked on its underside as illustrated in photo #5.
