A vintage classic among Himalayan jewelry is the eight point star pendant. There are many variations on the theme of eight, a number which holds great importance in Tibetan Buddhism. First, there are the ashtamangala, or eight sacred symbols, followed by the four cardinal directions (North, South. East, West) augmented by four secondary or intercardinal points. Buddhists also follow an Eightfold Path toward Enlightenment. As in mandalas, directional points anchor meditation and prayer and serve to calm and focus the mind.
