Vintage Art Nouveau Inspired Tooled Leather Saddle shops Bag Purse, Tooled Natural Leather Hand Bag with Sunflower Design, Southwestern Purse

This unsigned saddle bag purse is a homage to Art Nouveau design. The artist has surrounded sunflowers with large, scrolling leaves and stems. I estimate that it was made in the 60s or 70s, possibly in Mexico.

When I found it, the purse was pale, apparently untreated leather with deep brown accents. I applied a natural finish leather restorer and the color shops deepened to a warm honey brown.

The pull-down clasp piece is covered with decorated leather and keeps the top flap hooked onto a gold tone metal anchor piece. The interior is lined with thin leather that matches the darker, leather cord used to stitch the purse together.

There are 2 side pockets created by sewing zippered leather pouches to the sides. A third zippered leather pouch has been sewn to the center of the side pieces to create a divider that is not affixed to the bottom of the purse.

This is a sturdy purse that seems to have been seldom used. The strap is made of 2 pieces of leather sewn together and riveted into the purse body. The strap and side panels are 3 mm thick. The front, decorated panel is 4 mm thick.

Be warned that the strap is not long enough for most women to fit it comfortably over their shoulder. However, a petite woman with thin arms may be able to do so. Most women will have to carry this bag over their forearm or by hand.

Please inspect the pictures carefully. The purse is vintage and being sold with the following condition issues:

1) The lining is in good condition with no stains, but does have a small abrasion on the top flap. This abrasion is 6 mm by 2 mm. See Picture 8.

2) There is some surface cracking to the exterior leather pieces of the straps at the area where they meet the top flap of the purse. See Pictures 3 – 6.

3) The leather cord used to sew the strap pieces together has become worn and peeled where it rubs against the top flap and has slightly broken in a few places. However, these breaks have not caused the cord to unravel. See Pictures 1 – 6.

4) There is an almost unnoticeable tooling imperfection to the top curve of bottom, right hand corner leaf on the rear panel. See Picture 2.

5)There is some scratching and oxidation to the metal clasp closure. See Pictures 9 and 10.
