Enjoy vintage U.Va. history with a rare Wedgwood commemorative plate. These Bi-Centennial Edition plates were made in 1943 to commemorate Jeffrson's birth. Offered in the scarce Mulberry colorway, the border of each plate is richly embossed with architectural motifs from the Pavilions, along with the bust of Jefferson and the University of Virginia seal.
The series was first commissioned by the U.Va. Alumni Association in 1940. [See reference photos of original advance sales brochure in the last photo. Brochure is not included in this listing.]
The Wedgwood manufacturer's marks and "Bi-Centennial Edition, 1743-1943" stamp are clearly evident on the reverse. The full set of 12 includes the Rotunda, each of the Pavilions, and the serpentine wall. Our stock changes frequently, so check under "Scenes" to see which are available now.
These are vintage plates with customary vintage wear and crazing; no chips or damage. They measure 10 3/4 inches in diameter. The base color is a lovely ivory white which sets off the delicate mulberry/rose print perfectly.
