Francesco Hayez ( 10 February 1791 – 21 December 1882) was an Italian painter, the leading artist of Romanticism in mid-19th-century Milan, renowned for his grand historical paintings, political alries, and exceptionally fine portraits.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice with Teodoro Matteini (1754-1831) and in Rome with Pelagio Palagi (1777-1860) and formed under the influence of Antonio Canova in Rome as a classicist out. Returning to Milan in 1820, he switched to the Romantic School in 1821 and became its leading artist. After receiving the first prizes from the Academy of San Luca and the Brera, Hayez became a professor at the latter. In later years he tried to adapt in large historical images of the realistic-historical direction. In addition, his work consisted of biblical paintings, portraits, decorative frescoes. His paintings are distinguished by the romantic tenderness of the form and truth of the expression, less by the too soft coloring.
