This seated figure is made in a hard serpentine stone, lemon opal, a stone from Zimbabwe. It exudes a great peace of mind and pride. The sculpture is made out of 1 block of hard stone, and is polished (apart from stone the man is sitting on).
After carving the stone, the sculptor rasps, polishes and applies a translucent wax. It's a beautiful face, with nice details.
Square Chikwanda is a Zimbabwean sculptor; he was first taught by his father at Tengenenge Art centre in Zimbabwe. Right now he works in Ruwa, shops closer to the capital Harare.
The faces he creates have got very typical features. They are very stylised, often round or square, outspoken noses and mouth.
