What is a Carbonado Diamond? According to my research and the website Geology.com, "Carbonado diamonds are a rare and unusual variety of industrial diamond. They are composed almost entirely of microcrystalline diamonds in random crystallographic orientations." Further, "They were first recognized as a type of diamond in 1841 by Portuguese prospectors in Brazil who called them “carbonado” because they look like tiny pieces of charcoal."

The Carbonado Diamond is unique in that it has a polycrystalline structure versus a regular diamond. This makes the Carbonado a tougher diamond for industrial purposes. It is preferred by De Beers for diamond drilling. It has a MOH's rating of 10, the same shops as any other diamond. Further, Carbonado Diamonds are found in only two places on the Earth, Eastern Brazil and Central Africa. Carbonados are found in sediments or sedimentary rock. Regular diamonds are found with kimberlite and other rock type formations, while Carbonado Diamonds are not. There is confusion and uncertainty about exactly how Carbonado Diamond were formed. One hypothesis is they may have come from space.

I hope you enjoy the idea of this unique and very affordable Diamond - the Carbonado Diamond. Thank you for your interest in this listing.

All the best,
Tracy
