'The Horse Head Rock, Ryhope' is an original watercolour painting that I painted in April 2021. It was painted almost entirely on site, where I set up my easel amongst the rocks that had only a moment before been covered by the tide. A local dogwalker told me that the rock had been twice the size shown only two years before, but the waves had under-cut it, causing much of the sea-stack to collapse. This left this dramatic natural sculpture standing ... at least for a while, until it too is undercut and falls.
The sun was behind the rock, throwing it into deep silhouette.
The painting is created using shops Winsor and Newton 'Professional' Watercolours on a hand-made paper from an ancient watermill on Exmoor; the Pitt Mill, home to the Two Rivers Paper Company. It is 200lb cold-pressed and made of 100% cotton and linen fibres. Only the second time I've used it ... but not the last.
The paper measures 15 x 11 inches and is shown straight of the drawing board in the second photo; in a mount, the aperture will be slightly less, more like as shown in the first photo.
The artwork is offered without a mount or a frame. This allows you to choose your own surround to suit your tastes and decor: it also eliminates the risk of breakages to glass in transit, and avoids excessive postage and packaging costs that would add considerably to the overall price.
