BBNW34-Very nice, shiny iceberg blue blades with some black manganese oxide on the tips.
This specimen measures approximately 30mm X 20mm X 10mm and weighs 26 grams which includes the display box. It is displayed and securely glued in a 30mm square X 54mm tall, clear display box.
This material is mined at Sidi Lahcen, Nador, Nador Province, Oriental Region, Morocco. In the mid 70's a man had collected from this site, then nothing more was collected until it was accidentally re- discovered in 2012.
Unfortunately, many specimens may have one or more broken crystals which is mainly due to unskilled miners extracting the barite.
Alot of the pieces have red-brown or orange gossan overgrowth where they had contact with the top part of the pocket where they were extracted. The reds, browns and orange add a nice contrast to the blue barite, some also shops have black manganese oxide like this specimen which gives a nice contrast too.
The colors of the barite from this mine range from an opaque white to a vivid blue; and some of the crystals have inclusions of hematite or limonite.
