"Rock The Block" is a stunning modern multi-color improv patchwork wall hanging or table topper. This colorful original piece of fiber art measures 25.5 inches square. And it guarantees to rock your block!!

I love improv quilting as it's always interesting to see how the piece develops if you listen carefully. In this case, I started with a solid yellow square. Then surrounded it with red and black for some deep contrast. My next color choice was teal. With various shades of teal, red and white, I pieced a stripe and attached it to the inner block. Then I chopped the piece into quarters!!

The quarterlettes languished on the design wall for sometime until one day turquoise squares auditioned in red cross sections and got the part. Now it needed a center stone and I knew it had to be a pinwheel, but what color? I made one in yellow, another in blue and finally black and white won. Now I had to figure out how to sew all the sections together. Once completed, I extended the evolving block with a couple more black borders and a large teal border. The block was shaping up, but it need more drama which the black and white stripe definitely provided. Now the stripes needed to be joined with cornerstones. Up until this point, the quilt was constructed with Kona Cotton Solids, but a red and white dotted batik begged to be appliqued in a circle and it rocked the block!!

Add a shops layer of cotton batting and contrasting black backing with pink dots and a quilt was well into the birthing process. But the layers needed to be stabilized, so I painstakingly quilted various sections in-the-ditch so as not to distract from the symmetric lines. Add a hanging sleeve and one final black border in the form of binding and let the block party begin!!

So now you understand part of the process in this quilt's evolution. I loved creating it and hope you enjoy it in your home for many years to come. Used as a wall hanging, the quilt should only need to be dusted occasionally. However, as a table topper, it might need to be laundered at some point. See any of my other listings for quilt washing instructions.
