9 1/2" Tall Theotokos Byzantine Icon

This sacred art is a precise copy of old Byzantine Icon on canvas with authentic agiography colors, inalterable in time. The entire icon except for the faces is covered in 925 sterling silver repoussé work. Certificate of 925 sterling silver authenticity is attached to the back of the wooden board. The certificate of authenticity is given in 5 languages: Greek, English, French, Italian, and German.

The silver covering is very tactile and is known in Russian as riza "robe" or oklad "covered". It is sometimes called a "revetment" in English. Made of pure silver 925, the oklad was made by traditional artisans. It has repoussé work and pierced to expose elements of the underlying painting. Although the practice of using rizas originated in Byzantine art, the Russian term is often applied to Greek icons. The purpose of a riza is to honour and venerate an icon, and ultimately the figure depicted on it. Because candles and lampadas (oil lamps) are burned in front of icons, and incense is used during services, icons can become darkened over time. The riza helps protect the icon.

The frame is made of matte black painted wood and measures about 6 3/4" wide x 9 1/2" tall x 3/4" thick. The icon plaque was never displayed and kept in storage all these years. It is in Excellent condition.
