Stipple engraving of Turkish Women (Costume - Ottoman Empire)

Hand colored.

Published by W. Miller. London. Engravings dated 1802,

An exquisitely engraved and hand colored image, from Octavian Dalvimart's "The Costume of Turkey" which was first published in 1802.

Each hand-colored plate, drawn from life in 1798 by Octavien Dalvimart and stipple-engraved by John Dadley and William Poole, is accompanied by an explanation of the figure's role, responsibility and details of dress, written by Miller (misattributed by Hiler to William Alexander).

No dress can possibly be better calculated to conceal the person, than that worn by the Turksih females, both in Constantinople and the country, whenever they appear abroad. No woman is ever seen without her maharmah, which is generally formed of muslin; one part of which fastens under the chin, and encloses the head, the other crosses the mouth and nose, and admits only space enough to see from. They also constantly wear a feredje, which entirely envelopes their whole person.

Very good condition. An attractive print together with a separate sheet of descriptive text in both English and shops French.

This BEAUTIFUL colored print provides us a snapshot in history of early study of Turkish costume and culture.
