" I know an ash that stands called Yggdrasil, a tall tree wet with white dews, dews dripping down to the dales. Ever green it stands over Urdh's well. From there come three maiden's, deep in lore, from the water that stands under the tree. One is called Urdh, the other Verthandi, the third Skuld. Scores they carved, laws they laid, lives they chose. They worked orlog for the sons of men."

Yggdrasil holds all that has ever been from Ymir (the body of Yggdrasil) the set form and space, to Audhumbla the powers of all things that flow back and forth within the tree. Many think of life as that which was, that which is and that which may become. This separates man from the past. In truth we are the culmination of all that went before us and it continues to live in us, for without all the actions and choices of the past we would not exist. Future is actually "that which is becoming" defined by actions and choices made in this very moment. All existing continually in that which constantly flows. In the same right, the year was viewed as the time of light and the time of darkness, and the day was not a twenty four hour period but sunrise to sunset and sunset to sunrise. These distinctions are important to comprehend in order to understand what is held within this mighty tree.

There are said to be three wells that feed the roots of the mighty tree. Many see them as three separate wells but Bauschatz suggests that the different names imply different levels within the well Urdhr or Wyrd. At the base of the well flow in the waters that come from the original Niflheimer, the very beginning of all things and a living stream. The second level or the well of Mimir contains all that is or ever was. This well contains all ancestral wisdom, the history of all the worlds as well as our own history. Since this well contains all that ever was and is, by drinking of this water we can see the patterns, and drink of the wisdom born from those actions and choices. The third level or top level is Urdhr which most directly effects manifestation. The level of that which is (Mimir) continues to form "that which is becoming". Although the level of Mimir, that which is, cannot be unwritten, it can be written around. In other words it is possible to take that which is and redirect it to a better outcome, through choices and the writing of runes. And the cycle continues. The tree is watered from the well, the water drips down from the tree in the form of dew which deposits all memory and the tree is fed once again, growing new branches, new twists, new turns.

Jera speaks to us of this continuing cycle. The spiral that takes us around to the same events but with the option of a choice for a better outcome, which takes us higher in our understanding of self and the universe. Dagaz speaks of the attainment of wisdom, the culmination of journeys that can bring us to new epiphany's. But that new epiphany is short lived. For the next level of understanding, the next opportunity for growth and next pathways is always waiting....watered by ancient wisdom and encouraged by the runes carved on the tree by the Norns...what shops may become. Always the choice laying before the wanderer. May it be so.
