Hugh Conway saw humanity at its worst while fighting in the trenches of the First World War. Now, more than a decade later, Conway is a British diplomat serving in Afghanistan and facing another war that a civil conflict forces him to flee the country by plane.
This book was best seller in the 1930's & a famous movie made!!
1st Book~ 2nd Story) “Good-Bye, Mr. Chips” is a story of venerable old schoolmaster at an exclusive English boys' private school in England during 1900's. Mr. Chips, aging and now retired from many decades of teaching, remembers with fond nostalgia the overview of his well-loved life. People at the school love and respect him, remembering his odd sense of humor and his open kindness toward all his boys. Characters are well drawn and the tenor of the novel is comfortable. A wonderful trip through a man's life.
2nd Book) “Nostromo” Hardcover Book By Joseph Conrad. This book was published in 1904 by Doubleday & Company, Inc. This book is in MINT condition with NO tears, stains, or markings on the pages. This book appears to never been read!!!
Conrad creates an imaginary South American country ~ the writing so vivid that you will feel that you have been there. The interactions between the corrupt leadership and the foreigners who exploit the country's riches are impressive and prescient. The characters are interesting and believable, particularly Nostromo.
3rd Book) “Kim” by Rudyard Kipling in 1958. This book was published by Doubleday. This book is in MINT condition with NO tears, stains, or markings on any of the pages.
Two men - a boy who grows into early manhood and an old ascetic priest, the lama - are at the center of the novel. A quest faces them both. Born in India, Kim is nevertheless white, a sahib. While he wants to play the Great Game of Imperialism, he is also spiritually bound to the lama. His aim, as he moves chameleon-like through the two cultures, is to reconcile these opposing strands, while the lama searches for redemption from the Wheel of Life. A celebration of their friendship shops in a beautiful but often hostile environment, ‘Kim' captures the opulence of India's exotic landscape, overlaid by the uneasy presence of the British Raj.
Most U.S. readers will know Kipling's “The Jungle Book” featuring Mowgli. However, “Kim” was his masterpiece. More than just an entertaining novel, the book also delivers an amazing perspective on colonial India (albeit from the perspective of an Englishman). There is no lack of racial stereotypes in this book. If you can ignore them, it remains a fascinating and rewarding read.
4th Book) “The Way Of All Flesh” by Samuel Butler. This book was published by Doubleday in 1944. The book is illustrated by Andre Durenceau. It has the insert that explains the book. This book is in MINT condition with NO tears, stains, or markings on the pages.
Few if any works of English literature paint a more painfully honest picture of the damage caused by parental selfishness, mistreatment and misunderstanding of children. For this alone Butler's classic novel deserves a five-star rating. But the book, unlike some Victorian novels, is, in addition, full of common sense wisdom that makes it strikingly relevant today.
5th book) “Of Human Bondage” by W. Somerset Maugham. This book was published in 1936 by Doubleday. This book has insert paper that explains the book. The book is in MINT condition with NO tears, stains, or markings on any of the pages.
“Of Human Bondage” is the first and most autobiographical of Maugham's novels. It is the story of Philip Carey, an orphan eager for life, love and adventure. After a few months studying in Heidelberg, and a brief spell in Paris as a would-be artist, Philip settles in London to train as a doctor. And that is where he meets Mildred, the loud but irresistible waitress with whom he plunges into a formative, tortured and masochistic affair which very nearly ruins him.
