Sepik River Papua New Guinea - Palembai Ancestral Mask
Ancestor mask from the Palembai village in the Sepik River area of Papua New Guinea.
Great calm face with conch shell eyes and a nice beard. Hand carved from a single block of wood. It is quite heavy.
Bought in shops the 1970s from New Guinea Arts in Sydney ..so its probably older than this.
Label on back is original from then..
Surface chips and marks but one solid heavy carved piece of wood.
30cm long X 16cm wide X 8cm deep
