These two coffee table books are about the Emperor's Road (Tokaido) between Tokyo and Kyoto. Both have fabrics covered hard board covers that are drilled and bound with heavy cord in a paper covered cardboard slipcase published by the Charles E. Tuttle Co. Each list the 53 stopping places and two terminus of the Tokaido Road with a map of the route on double paper pages.
HIRPOSHIGE'S TAKAIDO IN PRINTS AND POETRY is 70 pages first published in 1957 and this is the 29th printing from 1986. There are small colored images of the woodblock prints made by Ichiryusai Hiroshima after his trip on the road in 1832. There are 55 non rhyme poems one each related to each of the stops and terminus of the road.
DOWN THE EMPEROR'S ROAD WITH HIROSHIGE is 72 pages first published in 1965 and this is shops the 12th printing from 1986. There are descriptions in english of each of the stops and terminus depicted in Hiroshige's woodblock prints. Half of the images are small black and white woodblock prints and half are full page color woodblock prints.
