Shona Stone Sculpture from Zimbabwe, signed by artist, child family sculpture, shops 5"x3" includes wood stand, excellent vintage condition
Please read the entire description for interesting cultural and shipping information.
This very sweet face is a Shona sculpture, the name given to a modern movement of stone carved sculpture created in Zimbabwe. It gets its name from the ‘Shona' tribe of people. The stone is most likely ropaka sandstone which the Shona quarry to carve touching portraits inspired by tribal traditions (see info below).
The sculpture is signed by the artist, M. KAPISA. The child measures just over 5" tall on the stand and 3" wide (13x7.5cm) There are a few tiny dings, I think from the natural stone but it is otherwise in excellent vintage condition. The wood stand is included. The smooth surface is lovely to touch.
This CANNOT BE COMBINED with any other item due to its weight and breakable nature.
Shipping in the U.S. is FREE (if list price is $35+). This will only be shipped in the U.S. For INTERNATIONAL shipping, contact me with your COUNTRY for information. **For Canada, include postal code.**
This will be well wrapped but I would recommend insurance against postal loss or breakage. Contact me first before purchasing.
The Shona relationship with the ground and the stone it provides in abundance was linked closely to their spiritual and cultural practices. As a result, it was historically the case that such works were not exported, nor created as artistic works to be enjoyed in such a way. Modern Shona sculpture is an evolution of this tradition, which begun in the mid 1900's as an emerging artistic movement.
I fell in love with these sculptures in the 90s. The main importers of these Shona cultures lived in Marin County (just north of San Francisco) where I was shops living at the time. Whenever a shipment would come in, many aficionados of these beauties would attend the uncrating which is where I bought 4 sculptures. I have already sold two (the mother and father) and the last remaining one besides this one is quite large and very heavy, made of a beautiful green serpentine stone.
