This is a mug I threw on the wheel using a cone 6 white stoneware body.
I used slip to create raised lines to draw the sun, the moon shops, and five mountain peaks on the outside. This drawing process is also known as slip-trailing.
I was inspired by the painting behind the throne at Gyeongbok palace in Seoul, Korea. The original scene depicts a surreal scene where both the sun and the moon are visible at the same time. I read that the presence of the sun and the moon in the sky represented the presence of deity, and the king is considered to be a type of god.
I made seven cups that are this same drawing idea!
Small: 4.5 inches tall, holds 15 fl oz
Medium: 4.75 inches tall, holds 18 fl oz
Large: 5 inches tall, holds 21 fl oz
The sun is spot glazed with a glossy red glaze, and the moon is spot glazed with a glossy white glaze. The rest of the outside of this cup was dipped in blue on the top half and amber glaze on the bottom half.
The inside of the cup is glazed with a food safe white glaze.
