Vintage Dr. John - Rare European Import CD from the man that was using the word Bonnaroo before the festival was born. The last time I got to see the master of rhythm, and blues, psychedelic soul and bayou funk was at the 10th year of the Bonnaroo music festival during the summer of 2011 in Manchester Tennessee. I had a great spot in the VIP section that got crowded up for a few moments with with some guys and flashing camera phones. As the small crowed thinned I noticed who they were trying to get a picture with as I found my self beside a velvet night club door type rope that separated the VIP section from the Super VIP section and I enjoyed the rest of the show with my Super VIP neighbor Ron Jeremy.

After a six-decade career that began in New Orleans in the 1950's combining blues, pop, jazz, boogie-woogie, funk, and rock and roll and continuing with incorporating medicine shows, Mardi Gras costumes, voodoo ceremonies and much more of New Orleans through more than 6 generations of fans. Dr. John had a heart attack in the summer of 2019 and went to meet his maker the legend left many timeless masterpieces behind to endure on in and with this world and this is one of the definitive collections.

When asked about the name origin of the annual Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee every summer since 2002 the founders gave the New Orleans rhythm and blues legend and his home recognition citing his 1974 album "Desitively Bonnaroo, which "is a Cajun slang word meaning "a really good time." and said that they chose this name for its literal meaning, and also to honor the rich Louisiana music tradition that inspired their desire to provide many styles of quality live music for appreciative fans." The Bonnaroo Music Festival was named after shops the album title, after the festival's founders looked through old albums for inspiration. Bonnaroo is also said to have derived from French bonne /bɔn/, the feminine form of bon /bɔ̃/ meaning "good," and French rue /ry/ meaning "street," translating roughly to "the best on the streets.

Gris-Gris, his 1968 debut album combining voodoo rhythms and chants with the New Orleans music tradition, was ranked 143rd on Rolling Stone′s "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list.[24] Three more albums, Babylon (1969), Remedies (1970) and The Sun, Moon & Herbs (1971), were released in the same vein as Gris-Gris. Dr. John writes, "In 1972, I recorded Gumbo, an album that was both a tribute to and my interpretation of the music I had grown up with in New Orleans in the late 1940s and 1950s. I tried to keep a lot of little changes that were characteristic of New Orleans, while working my own funknology on piano and guitar." The lead single from the album, "Iko Iko", broke into the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, eventually reaching #71. In 2003, Dr. John's Gumbo was ranked number 404 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

The winner of six Grammy Awards, Dr. John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by singer John Legend in March 2011.
In May 2013 he received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from Tulane University. There is a much more rich history available including accounts of countless other iconic and lesser known musicians that he played with throughout his life and it is all far beyond a brief description here.
