A beautiful Khmer Preah Bot painting.

Preah Bot are portable paintings on canvas which represent either single episodes from the life of the Buddha or from the Vessantara Jataka and the birth tales of Buddha. In the past they were presented by lay people to the monasteries during religious festivals as a way of making merit. They would then serve as replacements for murals in wooden temples where murals are not possible. The last photo shows examples of these murals of a temple in Phnom Penh.

These paintings are composed of paint on canvas, they can be rolled and folded.

Not a shops tourist piece, this is a genuine painting from 1987, from the Battambang province west of the temples at Angkor.

In good condition for the age. Some marking as pictured.
