“The Bashlyk” This felted wool hooded scarf, or Bashlyk*, is at once stunning, elegant, and highly functional! The deep Indigo blue of the Merino sheep wool is complemented by the brilliant blue viscose fibers that heavily line the hood's interior and puffs of which also lightly adorn the outside of the garment. The two lappets (or arms) begin in blue and end in white, transitioning through turquoise hues along the way. The lappets finish with handmade wool felted tassels, which tassels in blue also adorn the back of the hood. Wool is very WATER REPELLANT, so this hooded scarf can be safely worn in the rain or snow!

The hood, as mentioned, is of Merino wool and viscose fiber. The lappets are of various wools, including Merino, Corriedale sheep wool, and a blend of Merino and silk fibers. As an artist, I very much enjoyed learning about and creating my interpretation of the traditional and historic Bashlyk.

The approximate dimensions are: 80 inches in width (not counting the tassels) when extending the lappets horizontally left and right with hood in the middle; 11 inch tall hood from the chin area to the tallest point; and, the lappets 9 inches at the hood, tapering down to 3 inches where the tassels start.

As with all of my creations, this piece is a handmade, one of a kind, original artistic design, based on a traditional Bashlyk garment.

*BASHLYK (also bashlik, bashlyck and variations): a cone or round shaped headdress hood, typically of wool, felt, or leather, with lappets on each side for wrapping around the neck (hence a scarf-like effect). shops A traditional Turkic, Caucasian, Cossack garment, it became fashionable in the mid-to-late 19th Century in Russia and was adopted as a uniform item in the Russian armed forces, reportedly beginning with Cossack mounted troops.

PS: My husband says the name Bashlyk sounds to him like the name of the legendary creature “basilisk”, of recent Harry Potter book/movie fame. Just like a guy ....
