Product code: Vintage Bulova Lone Eagle Watch Jewelry Box, Carved shops Wood Casket, RARE, Charles Lindbergh

A RARE Bulova The Lone Eagle Watch or Jewelry Carved Wooden Casket-type Box that has a very shops interesting history related to Charles Lindbergh, the 1st Pilot to make a nonstop transatlantic flight in the 1920s. See below for the history. This presentation box has intricately carved designs on all four sides, including the word Bulova on the front. It has been painted a rich creamy beige.

The opening on the top consists of two square pieces that open in the middle to reveal a well in which you can place a number of pieces of jewelry if desired. The square pieces on the top of the lid were originally covered with velvet, which has worn away after years of use leaving a nice rose-colored fabric. The fabric has no rips or tears. On the inside of each of the lids is a piece of satin fabric stamped with the following: The left side says, "The Lone Eagle by Bulova." The right side says, "Cased and Timed by Bulova Observatory Time, Fifth Ave., NY." There is also the iconic Bulova woman with a clock face behind her.

Measures approximately 6 inches long x 3 inches wide x 2 1/4 inches high.

Condition: This wood box is in good vintage condition with some light chipping to the paint along the edges (please see photos for details). It is a sturdy box and the lid hinges are in good working order. The velvet on the top, as noted above, has been rubbed off but the underlayer is in good condition without holes or tears. This box originally held the Bulova Lone Eagle watch, which is not a part of this listing.

The historical value of this Lone Eagle watch box is difficult to access as there do not seem to be many available at this time. For aviation-related collectors, unique watch or jewelry box lovers, and those who enjoy historical collectibles, this is a true find.

History: In 1926 Bulova offered a prize of $1,000.00 to the first pilot to make a nonstop transatlantic flight between New York and Paris. Bulova was not the only entity supporting that venture. The $25,000 Ortieg Prize had been offered for that feat since 1919, but the prize had remained unclaimed. However, in 1926, there was renewed interest in the endeavor, largely due to technological advancements that appeared to make a successful flight possible. Several pilots announced intentions to attempt the flight, and the impending event attracted international attention.

Former U.S. Air Mail pilot, Charles Lindbergh, was one of the pilots who, in late 1926, announced his intention to make the transatlantic flight. Due to the popularity of the endeavor, Lindbergh was able to raise financial support from various business entities, allowing him to have his plane, the Spirit of St. Louis, custom built for the flight. On May 20, 1927, Lindbergh began the 34-hour journey covering over 3,610 miles and completed the transatlantic flight the following day by landing at Le Bourget airfield in Paris to much fanfare. He was dubbed the "Lone Eagle" and "Lucky Lindy" by members of the press. He thereby won the $25,000 Ortieg Price, as well as Bulova's $1,000 prize for successfully completing the flight.
