This live edge free-form bowl was hand carved from a burl of a brown mallee tree. Brown mallee represents one of the more than 700 species of the diverse genus of Eucalyptus, native to Australia. The bowl, measuring approximately 11 x 9 x 2.25 inches, shows the simple beauty, range of color, and figure that make shops the brown mallee burls truly spectacular.
A burl is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is caused by some kind of stress, such as injury, virus, fungus, insect infestation or mold growth. Intrusions and small cracks are common in burls of all species.
A finish of Danish oil – a combination of tung oil and varnish – seals and protects the wood. A beeswax topcoat is added for additional luster and protection.
Hand carved items, by their nature, are unique and may have slight imperfections. These add to the character and beauty of the pieces.
