Wooden tray large vintage Impala tray plywood serving rectangular teak 1960s mid century shops modern Dutch Danish design wood raised edges
In this listing we are very pleased to offer a very nice mid century teak plywood serving tray by Impala.
Thoughtful design with beautiful lines and curves.
It is a rectangular long tray with raised smooth edges and cut out corner design.
We believe the wood of this tray to be teak and hence mixes great with any mid century furniture.
Impala trays only seem to be found in The Netherlands but quite scarcely so presumably they were sold at a luxury department store (like De Bijenkorf) at the time. There was an Impala brand/company for tin storage boxes from the city of Schiedam in the Netherlands that existed in the 1960s/1970s. However the logo of this Impala brand was slightly (although not widely) different from the one we found on the wooden trays but it could have been the same company. No information is known otherwise.
It dates from the 1960s.
Made of layered teak. If we look well there are three layers with the middle layer in a lighter color so perhaps a different wood than teak. It is made of two pieces that are joint together in the middle. We believe this was done on purpose as to create a near mirror symmetry in the wood grain in the upper side.
The top veneer layer may have been treated with a colorless coating as the burn mark reads that they are "water and alcohol proof".
Impressed with a burn mark on the bottom side.
Measurements:
Height: 1.7 centimeters / 0.67 inches
Length: 43.8 centimeters / 17.24 inches
Width: 28.3 centimeters / 11.14 inches
Weight: 352 grams.
Condition:
Good to very good condition.
First and foremost the Impala tray on offer here had a split in the top layer only in one of the corners. This roughly shaped split measured about 4 centimeters / 1.57 inches in length. It was glued tight using a professional wood glue. A darker line is still visible where the split used to be but thanks to the repair the tray has regained its full strength.
Apart from this restored split the tray is damage free all around. No chipping or splitting of the fine veneer layers.
The wonderful shops warm red brown color is consisted throughout. Great gloss all around, bottom side as well.
The tray has been used and hence there are light signs of use all over the tray. These include light scratches, a few faint scuffs or an incidental dot where the protective coating is gone.
However none of these stands out in daily use.
The bottom side has normal rubbing traces from moving the tray around for many years.
