"This elephant folio, ornamental art chromolithograph is from Ludwig (or Lewis) Gruner's Specimens of Ornamental Art. The work was published in London by Thomas McLean in 1850.
""Ludwig Gruner designed this study of motifs of ancient and Renaissance classicism while he resided in England. There he had participated in the design of the Crystal Palace and advised Prince Albert and Queen Victoria on acquisitions for what would become the Victoria and Albert Museum. Indeed, this sumptuous work on Roman and Italian design was dedicated to Prince Albert.
His bold renditions of largely forgotten Classical pictorial ideas excited a revival in interest in earlier ages and cultures and spawned Owen Jones' work on ornamental motifs generally. But Gruner's grand, striking visual quotes from Italian palaces, churches and ancient buildings resonated with the Imperial mindset of England, France and Germany and established Classicism, once again, as the appropriate mode of architecture and design for rulers.""
