Antique Gilded Bronze Swimming Medal by Louis Octave shops Mottei - French Gilt Bronze medal - MT2/G5

Antique Swimming and Diving Golden Medal designed by the prestigious French sculptor Louis Octave Mattei, who was born in 1877 and studied under the great master, Tonellier. The medal is stamped as solid bronze in tiny letters on the rim, but has been given a Gold gilded finish. It is a golden award for swimming, with the face of the medal showing a swimmer and in the background a diver is just poised to take the dive. The medal is signed on this side and to the right of the swimmer is the foundry mark. On the reverse, a blank cartouche awaits inscription surrounded by laurel leaves and berries.

The medal is 1.5" or 4cm in diameter and is just 1/8" or 3.5mm thick. Without packaging, it weighs 27 grammes. Never having been engraved, this antique medal would make an outstanding award for a champion swimming athlete.
