Retail replacement value of approx. $220 US . 20.4x15x11.2 mm. February Birthday.. Any questions, please ask.
All our gemstones are true gems, earth mined, shops not man made, hand cut, not machine cut. EXPECT FLAWS! We provide unaltered pictures of the gem for you at very high magnification. Minor inclusions in any gem are not, as some think, a bad thing. They help a gemologist determine the authenticity of a gem. Man made gems are perfect.... but they are not real earth mined gems, and can be made in the millions, and do not increase in value. The difference between an original oil and a print. Supply and demand rules
I can provide my signed and sealed appraisal for retail replacement for an additional $5. If preferred I can provide a written appraisal signed and sealed by an independent master valuer ( at time of this listing I am using Steven Knight GG, R.M.V., CJA-CAP) for approx. $40. You have to ask for and pay for the master valuer's appraisal before I ship out, as he has to examine the gem in his lab. Takes about a week.
Better gems and jewelry items are kept in bank vault for security purposes and retrieving an item can take me a day or so, causing a slight shipping delay.
My selling prices are determined by my cost. Many items were purchased decades ago when prices were considerably less.
For those that do not want to settle for imitations, this is a chance to buy real gems at good prices. All gems have been examined by at least one gemologist. Many by a master valuer. There are an incredible number of fake gems out there. All my gems are earth mined, genuine gems. Why settle for imitations. As in all things, supply and demand determine value. Earth mined gems go up in value. Mass produced man made gems do not.
Amethyst is the birth stone for those born in February. Amethyst is 9 on the moh's scale.
Amethyst is said to bring protect it's owner from drunkenness ( must confess...never worked for me! :-) The name comes from the Greek for Not Intoxicated.
In Greek legend, the wine god Bacchus, angry over an insult and determined to avenge himself, decreed the first person he should meet would be devoured by his tigers. This happened to be a beautiful maiden named Amethyst on her way to worship at the shrine of Diana. As the tigers attacked, she sought the protection of the gods and was saved by being turned into a clear, white crystal. Bacchus, regretting his cruelty, poured the juice of his grapes over the stone as an offering; giving the gem its lovely purple hue.
In reality, the purple color comes from natural earth irradiation and some iron impurities. It is a symbol of faithful love, and at some times in history was valued so much it was worth more than diamonds.
