Mayan and Aztec Masks were frequently burial masks, placed over the faces of the deceased to signify a change.

This mask is different from the usual death mask in that it has a gecko inlaid in the forehead region. For Mayans, image symbols of lizards signified abundance and fertility. For Aztecs they symbolized unisexuality.

This leads to the question: "Is this a death mask or is it a fertility mask?"

The geometrically assembled semiprecious honey onyx with strategically placed mother of pearl abalone shells are stunning and create a powerful eye-catching image. A beautiful mosaic sculpture that is qualitatively better and more interesting than the run of the mill mask. The mask would play well on the wall or on a table, in almost any room or office.
