The secret to turning natural edge bowls is to harvest the wood in the winter months. If the wood is harvested in the summer months its bark will not stay on through the turning and curing process. The turner has to use very sharp tools and run the wood lathe at speeds up to 2000 rpm. This helps to prevent tear out of the bark. The irregular grain patterns in Ash Wood make for beautiful turnings.
