Here are two aquatint etchings that were made, in the late 1990s, by California and UK artist Stephan Whittle. They both have a wine/vineyard theme. The first etching shows a purple grape cluster, with colorful (red and green) Fall leaves. In its lower left corner, there is (written in pencil) the title of “Cabernet Sauvignon” and an indication that it is no. 133 ‘from a limited edition of 650 prints'. The second etching shows a half-filled wine bottle and two half-filled wine glasses. It has purple, blue, green, and brown colors. In its lower left corner, there is (written in pencil) the title of “In Celebration” and an indication that it is no. 342 ‘from a limited edition of 350 prints'. Each print has the signature of the artist (in pencil), in the lower right corner. (Note: Whittle was known as both Stephan and Stephen, but he signed the name Stephan on these artworks.) Both prints are also on paper that has a border around the central etched image that is embossed, with images of grapes and leaves.

Stephan Whittle (1953-2000) was born in Leeds, England. He studied Etching (at the Chelsea School of Art) and Fine Art (at Brighton College of Art), in England. In the early years of his career, he worked as an artist, teacher, and graphic designer, in England and in Switzerland. In 1979, he began working as a full-time etching artist. Initially, pastoral scenes and other scenes from the English countryside were favorite subjects for his etchings. In 1981, he had the first exhibition of his art (at a London gallery) and he was commissioned by Christies Contemporary Art to do a series of etchings with pastoral themes. Throughout the remainder of the 1980s, he exhibited his art in other shows in London and shows in Tokyo, Paris, Frankfort, and New York. In 1992, Whittle moved to the United States, where he (first) lived in Fairfield, Iowa and later (in 1997) began living in Sonoma County, California. In the late 1990s, he added California's vineyards, oceans, and domestic settings as subjects of his etchings. In the last years of his life (around 2000), he began to expand his art, to include paintings and mixed media types. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Whittle had one-man and group shows for his art, in over a dozen countries. His artwork is highly collectible and is held in both corporate and private collections, worldwide.

Each framed and matted etching is 9 inches (wide) by 11 inches (high). The actual etched Cabernet Sauvignon image (with its embossed border) is about 4 3/4 inches (wide) by 4 7/8 inches (high). The actual etched In Celebration image (with its embossed border) is about 4 1/2 inches (wide) by 4 1/2 inches (high).

The etchings are in very good condition, with no tears, stains, or yellowing of the background paper or the matting paper. The green frames appear to be wood, with a ‘faux' lacquered finish, and are also in good condition. There is a paper that is attached to the dust cover that is on the back of one of the prints, which describes the artist's etching techniques. The Cabernet Sauvignon dust cover has a small tear, in the upper right corner.
