The biblical account of the widow of Nain is an example of just how personally and deeply the Savior loves us, no matter who we are or what we have done. However, if we only read the brief recounting in Luke, without knowing the details of the geography involved and the cultural beliefs of the time, it is easy to miss the full implications of what the Savior did to help this woman. My hope in creating this painting was to make some of the geographical information that makes this story so touching more accessible.

This image was heavily inspired by an Ensign article by Keith J. Wilson which described the historical and geographical details of the story and what they teach us. It was also inspired by my love of old maps, which often include pictures and descriptions of the people and stories associated with the land they depicted. I included text from three different bible translations to tell key parts of the story, and although I referenced actual maps of the area around Nain, exact geographical reproduction was not my goal.

I love this quote from Wilson's article, “this miracle was… about rescuing one desperate soul. Jesus was aware that something was very wrong for this woman—someone who was looked down on in their culture. Her shops situation cried out for His immediate attention, even if He had to travel far to be there precisely at the right moment. He knew her desperate situation, and He came quickly.” This is the message I hope to convey with this picture, that no matter how we are seen by others, the Savior has the same love for each of us. I know that we can all hear the Savior's comforting words “weep not,” no matter how permanent our pain or losses appear to us.
