Large silk shawl, upcycled shops Japanese kimono, 127

"Magic Carpet Ride"
This is a lovely soft flowing shawl made from vintage kimono silk.

Every time I look at this shawl I am transported to a child's fairy tale about a magic flying carpet. The pattern on the main silk piece in this shawl really does look like a Persian rug.

I can see you wearing this shawl to the opera, a wedding, the prom or any formal event. I also think this shawl can be worn casually, You can easily wrap yourself into this shawl.

This shawl is one of my biggest shawls. It looks like those worn by East Indian women with their saris.

The main front panel is a silk crepe that I think looks like shops a Persian rug, hence the title. It has a narrow piping that is striped, then a border of a smooth silk that has swirls woven into it with gold metallic thread, a piping of black Tsumugi silk, and finally a border of new silk dupioni. One end has a large border of the same black Tsumugi silk as the second piping. The other border is new silk dupioni on which I have couched some rayon chenille. The back is also new silk dupioni.

✿ Japanese Kimono Silk ✿
The Japanese artisans are masters at textile design. The kimono silks are works of art. The designs can be seen in the silk yarn itself, in the intricate weave structures and the beautiful motifs painted on the surface. Kimono silk is usually heavier than what we in Canada normally see. Google "Itchiku Kubota" to see the work of one of their great masters. All of my scarves are made from upcycled kimonos that I have sourced directly from Japan.
